Breast reduction, technically known as reduction mammaplasty, is usually performed for physical relief and cosmetic improvement of large, pendulous breasts. This procedure removes fat, glandular tissue, and skin from the breasts, making them smaller, lighter, and more firm. It can also reduce the size of the areola, the darker skin surrounding the nipple. The goal is to give a woman breasts that are more in proportion with the rest of her body.
Breast reduction is not recommended for women who intend to breast feed.

THE BEST CANDIDATES FOR BREAST REDUCTION
Women with heavy, large, pendulous breasts may experience a variety of problems, such as back and neck pain, skin irritation, restricted activity; bra straps may leave indentations in their shoulders, and some women or teenage girls feel extremely self-conscious
ALL SURGERY CARRIES SOME UNCERTAINTY AND RISK
In exchange for smaller and more comfortable breasts, the reshaping of the breast will result in some visible incisional scars. The final scar character, whether a fine, white line or a wide and discolored one, cannot be predicted. It is determined by genetics. At a minimum, a scar will surround the nipple and continue vertically down the front of the breast and may, in some cases, extend along the fold itsef.
THE SURGERY
The procedure is commonly performed as an outpatient under general anesthesia and is of 2 ½ to 3 ½ hours duration. There is little pain, but, rather a bruised, swollen feeling and numbness of the nipples. Over 95% of our patients eventually regain nipple sensation following surgery. Absorbable sutures are used so that no suture removal is required. After forty-eight hours, a sports bra wear may be worn. Most patients resume their normal activities after two weeks of recuperation (except strenuous upper body activities).
YOUR NEW LOOK
Although much swelling and bruising will disappear within the first few weeks, it may be six months to a year before your breasts settle into their new shape. Even then, their shape may fluctuate in response to hormonal shifts, weight changes or pregnancy
